Chemical Peels

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical peels are used as part of the facial rejuvenation spectrum.

They are used in secondary and tertiary measures mainly, however light peels may be used in young patients.  They remove the superficial layers of the skin at different levels to stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate skin health.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS?

  1. Skin resurfacing to improve the texture of the skin and rejuvenate
  2. Removal of fine wrinkles
  3. Improving scarring
  4. Correct pigmentation of the skin

PREPEEL PREPARATIONS

  1. Motivate the patient
  2. Prevent pigmentation changes
    • HYDROQUINONE 4% 2- 4 weeks before the peel and again after the peel once epithelialization has occurred
  3. TRETINOIN (Retinoid) to be used ideally 4 weeks before chemical peel to stabilize the skin and improve wound healing
  4. Avoid the sun before your skin peel and use sun screen after your treatment
  5. Anti-viral medication (for deep skin peels)

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR CHEMICAL PEEL

Depending on the type of peel you have the post treatment recovery will be different.

With a light peel, some redness and inflammation can be expected however recovery is within a few days.

Medium peels the recovery is usually within a week or 10 days.

Deep peels typically the recovery can be up to 4 weeks. The redness may persist, and there is crusting of the face for up to 1 week to 10 days. Although the deeper peels have more improved effects on rejuvenation.

Sun must be avoided after a chemical peel.
Post treatment ointments are prescribed and to be used correctly.
